Volunteer FAQ’s

Volunteer FAQ’s

Can I volunteer if I have previously been a companion with Emmaus?

Yes, you can volunteer with us if you have resided as a companion in an Emmaus community before. It is important that you feel you are in the right place in your life to be able to support current companions and the charity.

Can I volunteer with Emmaus if I have a criminal record?

In order to safeguard our companions and individuals sleeping rough that we engage with we require our volunteers to complete a DBS check. However, having a criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from being able to get involved with Emmaus. We consider each application individually and give you the opportunity to discuss the offence if necessary.

Would I receive volunteer expenses?

Yes, we believe that volunteers should be reimbursed for reasonable out of pocket expenses that they incur whilst volunteering with us. We ask for expenses to be agreed in advance and in accordance with our Volunteer Travel and Expenses Policy.

How much time do I need to commit to volunteering with Emmaus?

In general, there is no overall minimum time requirement for our volunteer roles. However, for anyone volunteering with our Outreach service we do ask for a commitment to a full shift to avoid any lone working amongst the team. We are flexible with frequency of volunteering time, with some of our volunteers contributing weekly, fortnightly, or monthly.

Would I receive training in my volunteer role with Emmaus?

Yes, we provide a thorough induction when you join us and training that is relevant to your volunteer role. This is a mixture of on-the-role training and external training modules, depending on what your role with us entails. We also do our best to offer ongoing training opportunities throughout your volunteer journey with us where possible.
