We are always looking for people who are keen to get involved with Emmaus Hull and East Riding.

Volunteer Driver / Drivers Assistant Role

Scope of Role:
Where full driving licence is in place support the logistics team with collections and deliveries by using the Emmaus Vehicles. Where no licence is held support the drivers with collections and deliveries. Ensuring that the vehicle policies are followed including legal driving legislations. Manual handling of small and large items.

Location: The Superstore, Lockwood Street
Time Commitment: ½ a day to 5 full days Monday to Saturday between 09:00 – 16:30
Potential Tasks:
• Driving / assisting a driver in an Emmaus Hull and East Riding car, van or other vehicles
• Providing customers with information about Emmaus Hull & East Riding
• To assist in keeping Emmaus vehicles clean, tidy, safe, and secure
• To notify managers with any concerns
• Deliver excellent customer service
• Deliver items to customers properties in good condition
• Work with warehouse operatives around deliveries
• Offer gift aid, complete relevant forms, enter details onto the Emmaus database and affix labels to donated items.
• Inspect items on collection and refuse goods if necessary
• Complete correct paper work
• Conduct daily vehicle inspections
• Support loading and unloading of vehicles
• Follow health and safety procedures
• Undertake ‘tip runs’ to dispose of surplus / damaged furniture items
• Undertake delivery / collection runs to Emmaus retail outlets as and when requested.
Volunteer Driver need to have:
• Current full driving licence held for a minimum of two years and preferably without endorsements (all licences provided will be shared with our insurance company for clearance)
• Due consideration for the safety of themselves, their and other road users and always adhere to the Highway Code
• Ability to operate as a team member
• Flexible attitude to types of jobs required within the role
• Respect for the organisation’s policies
• A willingness to participate in relevant and appropriate training in order to carry out the duties required of the role
• A pleasant manner and the ability to deal with the public at a face-to-face level
• Reliability

Volunteers will be training and inducted for the above tasks. There is no commitment to complete these every day and the task will be adapted to the volunteer’s commitment hours, skill set and preference.

Protective equipment and uniforms will be provided where necessary. Expenses incurred during volunteer time will be reimbursed. Lunch is provided for in the community.

Ebay Assistant Role

Scope of the Role:

To work alongside companions, staff and volunteers to monitor and manage the Ebay selling account for Emmaus Hull and East Riding. Respond to customer messages and queries, list items for sale and manage listings, package items for delivery, arrange items to be delivered.

Location: The Superstore Lockwood Street

Time Commitment – Flexible Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday 10:00 – 16:00

Potential Tasks:

  • List items on the Ebay selling platform
  • Sort through donated items to select suitable products to sell on the Ebay
  • Respond to customer queries, questions and complaints via Ebay platform
  • Communicate with staff members, volunteers and companions with tasks and issues
  • To maintain excellent customer care and maintain excellent feedback
  • To follow refund and purchase policies of Emmaus Hull and East Riding
  • Arrange for items to be cleaned and polished before being listed
  • Assign realistic and reasonably sale and delivery prices
  • Complete administration as required.
  • Follow health and safety policies
  • Package items safely and as described ready for dispatch.
  • Order packaging in timely manner
  • Print delivery labels
  • Provide feedback for customers
  • Store potential items for dispatch in correct areas.
  • Take good, clear pictures for the item listings.
  • Research items that sell well on Ebay.

Role Requirements

  • Already know and understand how to use Ebay
  • Be able to use Microsoft office packages efficiently
  • Be able to use a camera to take pictures
  • Be able to provide excellent customer service
  • Be excellent in written communication.

Volunteers will be training and inducted for the above tasks. Tasks will be adapted to the volunteers commitment hours, skill set and preference.

All volunteers will need to provide and up to date DBS.

Warehouse Operative Role

Scope of Role:

Work effectively and efficiently alongside companions to support all aspects of the warehouse operation including loading, unloading of van, sorting through items, donations, answering telephone, booking collections & deliveries, dealing with customers on the telephone and face to face, keeping work area tidy, inputting and using excel spreadsheet for bookings.

Location: The Orchard Lockwood Street

Time Commitment: ½ a day to 5 full days Monday to Friday between 09:00 – 16:30

Potential Tasks

  • Wear relevant protective clothing
  • Load / Unload Van
  • Keep working area safe, clean and tidy
  • Answer the telephone
  • Sort through donations
  • Support items being moved on the shop floor
  • Move sold items into containers
  • Deal with customers face to face and over the phone
  • Provide quality customer care
  • Deal with complaints, queries and questions
  • Support customer service role as requested
  • Support items being moved onto the shop floor, including cleaning and general preparation of these items.
  • Dispose of unwanted / damaged donated goods in externally sited bins ensuring items are recycled where suitable and appropriate.
  • Assist in the movement of goods out of the warehouse which are to be collected by authorised third parties (‘ragman’) to sign and take receipt of relevant waste transfer notes, retaining records for filing.

Kitchen Support

Scope of Role:

Work alongside companions providing meals on a daily basis for companions, staff and visitors. Follow HACCP guidelines and food safety regulations, request and order stock, day dot items as required, plan menu and meals, maintain store cupboards including harvest festival, complete paperwork as required, take part in deep cleans, maintain equipment, clean kitchen clothes

Location: The Orchard Lockwood Street

Time Commitment: ½ a day to 5 full days Monday to Saturday between 09:00 – 16:30

Potential Tasks:

  • Wear relevant protective clothing
  • Prepare and cook meals
  • Support opening and closing procedures
  • Complete paperwork
  • Support deep cleans
  • Clean pots, serving plates, cutlery and equipment
  • Empty and clean bins
  • Clean fridges and freezers
  • Store food items in correct areas
  • Keep store cupboards in order
  • Day dot items
  • Monitor dates of items

A certificate in food and hygiene level 2 is desirable however support will be giving to achieve this.

Upcycling, Repair and Restoration Role

Scope of the Role:

Work alongside companions in the workshop to upcycle, repair and restore items for resale in our retail outlets as well as to create point-of-sale or other product displays from donated or recycled materials. Use tools as instructed. Repair damaged items for resale.

Location: The Orchard Lockwood Street

Time Commitment: ½ a day to 5 full days Monday to Saturday between 09:00 – 16:30

Potential Tasks:

  • Wear relevant protective clothing
  • Ensure equipment is safe to use and has been PAT tested
  • Keep working area safe, clean and tidy
  • Restoring furniture
  • Upcycling donated items
  • Sorting through donations
  • Painting, varnishing sanding down furniture
  • Removing and recycling items that are unusable

Volunteers will be training and inducted for the above tasks. There is no commitment to complete these every day and the task will be adapted to the volunteer’s commitment hours, skill set and preference.

Customer Service Role

Scope of the Role:

To work alongside companions and serve customers in social enterprises, operate the till, maintain cleanliness, adhere to health and safety regulations, price items for sale, rotate stock, support opening and closing procedures, support events, support promotions, work towards targets, contributing to business ideas and development, promote gift aid.

Location: The Superstore Lockwood Street / Home from Home Whitefriargate

Time Commitment – ½ a day to 5 full days / Monday to Friday between 09:00 & 16:30

Potential Tasks:

  • Using the till to complete transactions with customers
  • Support customer queries, questions and enquiries
  • Follow the opening / closing procedures
  • Regularly check toilet and hygiene facilities
  • To notify managers with any concerns in a timely manner
  • To maintain excellent customer care standards at all times
  • Price items as per the pricing guide
  • To follow refund and purchase policies of Emmaus Hull and East Riding
  • Clean and polish items before being placed on the shop floor
  • Clean items on shop floor daily
  • Steaming Clothes
  • Ensure electrical items have been through the PAT testing team
  • Follow health and safety policies
  • Provide support for events
  • Encourage customers to gift aid

Enterprise and Community Helper

Scope of Role:

This is a flexible role that involves working alongside staff and companions in either the enterprise and community depending on current need of Emmaus Hull and East Riding. Supporting events, supporting promotions, cleaning enterprise or community, supporting the grounds, raising donations, fundraising, supporting the shops, helping with appeals like Christmas & Harvest Festival.

Location: The Orchard Lockwood Street & Emmaus Emporium Whitefriargate

Time Commitment: ½ a day to 5 full days Monday to Saturday between 09:00 – 16:30

Potential Tasks:

This role can include but is not limited to the following tasks:-

  • Serving customers
  • Promoting the enterprise and community
  • Cleaning the enterprise and community
  • Support internal and external events
  • Raising and sorting donations
  • Fundraising
  • Support Christmas & Harvest Appeals
  • Light administration duties
  • Moving and handling shop products
  • Pricing shop products
  • Supporting loading / unloading of the van
  • Leaflet distribution
